Costa Rica below 300 known active coronavirus cases

Costa Rica confirmed seven new cases of the coronavirus over the past day, totaling 780 cumulative known cases, the Health Ministry announced Saturday afternoon.

Over the same period, 19 more people recovered from COVID-19, leaving Costa Rica with 480 total recoveries and 294 known active cases. The data mean Costa Rica has registered its 23rd-straight day-over-day decrease in known active coronavirus cases.

Six people have died after contracting the coronavirus, and 22 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 or complications. Six of them are in intensive care with an age range of 53 to 75 years old.

Costa Rica has processed a total of 16,517 diagnostic tests for SARS-CoV-2 (707 more than Friday), which corresponds to 3,232 tests per 1 million people. The country has averaged 479 daily tests over the last five days.

Health authorities now test all citizens returning to Costa Rica and all truck drivers entering the country. At least 17 people have tested positive for the coronavirus via this process.

Costa Rica on Thursday extended its border restrictions, banning foreign visitors until June 15. The government will announce Monday a timeline for reopening the country; the plan will include a focus on local tourism.
