“Over View” is a touring exhibit that features five Costa Rican videographers. This is good for the home team, and it’s exciting to see creative Costa Ricans featured prominently, but the exhibit’s real achievement is its diversity.
This ambiguity has always been the most challenging aspect of TEOR/éTica, the small, avant-garde gallery in Barrio Amón. Each piece must be taken individually, and even then, visitors may feel lost.
“Painting helps me with the existential feeling of being trapped between the ugliness and beauty of the world,” says Griffin-Zúñiga. “It’s the first time I’ve been able to put energy behind an artistic pursuit in a consistent way.”
Photography, painting, drawing, sketching, engravings, performing arts and many other styles form part of the wide range of art offered, as well as music: various artists will be performing while people walk through the displays.
While Man Yu’s career has been brief, she has garnered an impressive reputation in her first decade as an artist, winning prizes and displaying her work in such distant places as Italy and Spain.
Portraitist Lucas Iturriza has spent the past half-decade capturing faces on film and talking with his subjects about their lives. The purpose of the project has been to celebrate the diversity of Costa Rica – not just as faces and skin colors, but as backgrounds and lifestyles.
Free and open to the public, Transitarte incorporates scores of performances, presentations, and workshops, all set against the leafy backdrop San José’s urban parks. If you’ve got a free day, you can drift effortlessly from one park to another, soaking up the arty atmosphere.
The exhibit in San José is designed to celebrate 80 years of diplomatic relations between Costa Rica and Japan, but it’s also an excuse to display some nerdy toys and posters. Japanese pop culture has a range of imagination that has inspired billions of consumers around the world, and despite the many shared motifs, no two franchises are exactly the same.
