Arts and culture in brief: the week ahead in Costa Rica

This week at Cine Magaly, in eastern San José, catch a special screening of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy’s performance of “The Lady of the Camellias,” the acclaimed John Neumeier ballet set to music by Frederic Chopin; co-organized by the Costa Rican-North American Cultural Center, or CCCN (Tuesday, Feb. 9).

At the CCCN building itself in Barrio Dent, San Pedro, critic Mario Giacomelli kicks off a series of film appreciation workshops that will continue for the next six Wednesday evenings and cover everything from screenwriting to camera work, “Citizen Kane” to Italian neorealism (Wednesday, Feb. 10).

As school starts and San José’s worst traffic returns, step out of the city and back in time with a visit to a free exhibit of Costa Rica’s finest landscapes at the Centro Cultural e Histórico José Figueres Ferrer in San Ramón (continues through Saturday Feb. 27).

And in an event just north of San José – well, okay, 5,661 kilometers north – Costa Rican photographer and former Tico Times collaborator Rebeca Hernández offers her first solo exhibition in Vancouver, Canada, “God is in the Details” (Sunday, Feb. 7).
