News briefs: Costa Rica asks tourists to postpone, not cancel, their trips

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted nearly everybody. The global crisis is stressful, more than a little scary, and has quickly changed many of our day-to-day lives.

Here are a couple of more uplifting stories — that alone don’t merit a full article — to brighten your Monday.

‘Don’t cancel, postpone’

President Carlos Alvarado joined dozens of others in sharing this uplifting video asking tourists to postpone — rather than cancel — their planned trips to Costa Rica.

The video has quickly become an unofficial campaign for Costa Ricans, many of whom are directly affected by the country’s travel restrictions and precipitous decline of the global tourism industry.

The campaign was created by Adam Baker, who works for Namu Travel.

Patron saint overflies the country

While everyone else was encouraged to stay home, the Virgin of Los Angeles had a busy weekend of travel.

Costa Rica’s patron saint was loaded into a helicopter and flown throughout the national territory on Sunday. Check it out for yourself:

The flight was meant to inspire and bring hope to the Costa Rican people as the country faces COVID-19.

For the less religious among us, Teletica spent the weekend streaming memorable Costa Rican soccer matches via TD Más. And, of course, we published a cute photo of a sloth.

Stay safe this week

These are strange and uncertain times for practically all of us. Wherever you are in the world, we at The Tico Times wish you good health and happiness this week.

We hope to see you in Costa Rica soon!
