Mag-4.5 earthquake rattles Costa Rica’s Central Valley

Just before noon Friday a magnitud-4.5 earthquake struck 14 kilometers southeast of Santa María de Dota, in Costa Rica’s Los Santos region, according to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) and the National Seismological Network.

The quake could be felt in the capital, San José, and Cartago. There were no reports of injuries or damage at this posting but a temblor with a magnitude of 4.5 has the potential to cause moderate damage.

The Los Santos region is not densely populated and best known for its coffee and wildlife, including tapirs and the emerald-colored quetzal.
