"My life revolves around music. I wake up, brush my teeth and play the trumpet," says Desamparados-born musician Esteban González. Sit in on his conversation with The Tico Times.
“The Caramels” might have a sweet name, but there's nothing docile about their music. The five women who make up this new Costa Rican rock band have become stage-name sisters, sharing the same dulcet apellido.
Nemesio, Santiago and Sofía Díez, the stars of The Rolling Penguins, will rock the Jazz Café in order to raise funds for three women who are studying at the university level thanks to scholarships from the Costa Rica U.S.A. Foundation for Cooperation (CRUSA) and the Latin American University for Science and Technology (ULACIT).
“The secret behind this orchestra and the reason why it is called Humanities Orchestra is because the main objective of the university is not to create ‘button pushers,’” Zamora said. “This is an industrialized society in which we are seen as ‘entities’ that produce to consume more and more; it’s a vicious cycle.”
Rock lovers will agree that The National Auditorium was the right place to be yesterday night, where was performed the opening night of the first original rock opera ever made in Costa Rica, “Heroes 1856”. Which tells the story of the National Campaign on 1856 where Costa Ricans fought against the filibusters who tried to take Central America.
