Monday marked the 192nd anniversary of the day the Partido de Nicoya, today known as Guanacaste, decided to become part of Costa Rica.
Each year on July 25, the country’s northwestern province, and especially the town of Nicoya, goes to great lengths to show off its pride. Children dress up in traditional clothing; folkloric dancers perform with huge smiles and bursts of color; vendors sell Guanacaste treats like the savory cookies rosquillas and the fermented corn drink chicheme; and protesters take advantage of the president’s visit to let him know what they think about his policies.
