THE University of Costa Rica is hostinga series of conferences about the environment.The series began this week with a talkentitled “Environment, Biodiversity andDevelopment,” by Rodrigo Gámez, presidentof the National Biodiversity Institute(INBio).All the conferences, under the umbrellatitle “Environment and Conservation”will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesdays inAuditorium 001 in the Faculty ofMicrobiology.The talk “Access to EnvironmentalJustice” will be given by Rafael González,dean of the UCR Law School, on Aug. 25.Ronny Viales, director of the UCRgraduate history program, will deliver theSept. 8 talk entitled “UCR Social Studiesin Science, Technology and theEnvironment.”“Initiative of Four Governments forthe Conservation and Sustainable Use ofthe Tropical Pacific” is slated for Sept. 22by Ricardo Meneses, secretary of theMarine Corridor of the Pacific.“Private Conservation … An Incentiveto Serve Society?” will be presented byCarlos Luis Muñoz, of the MonteverdeConservation League, Oct. 6.Jorge Lobo of the UCR School ofBiology will speak Oct. 20 about the“State of Forests in the Osa Peninsula.”“Indicators of the Ecological Impactof Development” will be discussed Nov.10 by Álvaro Fernández of the UCRObservatory of Development. The lasttalk of the series, “EnvironmentalGuarantees,” is scheduled for Nov. 24with Gabriel Quesada of the UniversidadNacional.
