Magnitude-4.3 earthquake shakes Nicaragua

MANAGUA – A quake early Monday in the northwest of Nicaragua did not cause casualties or damage, Nicaragua’s Institute of Territorial Studies reported.

The quake was registered at 3:04 a.m., with an epicenter a mile deep off the coast of Nicaragua in the Pacific Ocean, its origin caused by friction of the Cocos and Caribbean continental plates.

Other smaller quakes were recorded Monday morning, but most were not strong enough to be felt. The smaller quakes could be aftershocks of a strong earthquake Sunday night off the Pacific coast of El Salvador.

Since then, El Salvador has registered 68 aftershocks. Following Sunday night’s earthquake, U.S. officials issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coast of Central America and Mexico, but the warning was later cancelled.
