Costa Rica to celebrate 5th Whale and Dolphin Festival

Costa Rica kicks off its fifth annual Whale and Dolphin Festival this weekend, and this year that will include an appearance from President Laura Chinchilla.

The festival takes place in Uvita, on the southern Pacific Osa peninsula. The festival lines up with the annual migration of humpback whales away from the warmer tropical waters, according to news site AmeliaRueda.com.

The Whale and Dolphin Festival official website listed tours for $20 for children and $40 for adults.

Private tour prices range from $65 to $85 according to a report from the daily La Nación. The newspaper also reported that hotels on the pacific range from $160 for luxury rooms to as cheap as $50 for a double occupancy room. La Nación recommended tour companies Bahía Aventuras, Terratur, and Tracopa.

Various tour companies operate out of the Uvita community during the two-week festival.

Tours packages include transportation and meal options. Tours can vary in their length from as little to four hours to an all-day tour.

A Facebook page covering news for the festival can be found here, and its website can be found here.

For those interested in opportunities protecting and helping to conserve whales and dolphins, the Keto Foundation been working on that for 10 years, and its information can be found here.
