Deva Premal and Miten Give Meditation Concerts

Deva Premal and Miten, musicians who have played for the Dalai Lama, will be performing meditation concerts two evenings in the San José metropolitan area.

The first show, scheduled for April 27 at the KapoliMeditationCenter in the western suburb of Escazú, is sold out. The second show, set for April 28, is presented by the Meridiano radio program on Radio U, 101.9 FM, in celebration of its ninth year on the air. The concert will be held at the National Auditorium in San José’s Children’s Museum.

The National Auditorium was chosen as a venue for its acoustics. Candles and incense will set the ambience. The audience will be asked to hold applause until the end of the show – silence between songs is a part of the experience, and according to Deva Premal, silence before, after and during the chanting creates a profound space for meditation.

Miten is a singer-songwriter from England, who in the 1970s opened for groups such as Fleetwood Mac, Lou Reed and Ry Cooder. He left rock and roll behind and is now focusing on meditation music.

Premal and Miten met in India at an ashram. Miten was playing evening meditation music, and encouraged Premal, a classically trained musician and singer, to harmonize with him. The mantras they would sing were familiar to her – growing up in Germany, she chanted them with her father.

They have since released more than a dozen albums and played concerts around the world.

Tickets are ¢15,000 ($30) and can be purchased at Viento y Agua in Multiplaza Escazú; Centro de Yoga y Meditación Kapoli in Escazú; Centro de Balance Integral in San Pedro, east of San José; and through Meridiano organizers at 390-1156 or 840-2834.

The Meridiano radio program can be heard Monday through Friday, noon-2 p.m.
