Coronavirus in Costa Rica: Number of recoveries surpasses amount of active cases

The amount of people who have recovered from the coronavirus in Costa Rica has for the first time surpassed the number of active cases in the country.

Costa Rica confirmed eight new cases of the coronavirus over the past day, totaling 733 known cases, the Health Ministry announced Saturday afternoon.

Over the same period, 17 more people recovered from COVID-19, leaving Costa Rica with 372 total recoveries and 355 active cases. Costa Rica has also registered its sixteenth-straight day-over-day decrease in known active coronavirus cases.

“The curve has not, thank goodness, been like in Italy, or Spain, or parts of China or some states in the United States,” said Health Minister Daniel Salas. “But we still face that risk. We’re still walking a fragile path.”

Six people have died after contracting COVID-19, and 16 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19. Six of them are in intensive care with an age range of 57 to 75 years old.

Costa Rica has processed a total of 13,632 diagnostic tests for COVID-19 (103 more than Friday), which corresponds to 2,667 tests per 1 million people.

The country can conduct up to 2,500 tests each day. Over the past five days, Costa Rica has processed an average of 180 tests per day.

Costa Rica tests everyone who qualifies as a suspected coronavirus case, according to Salas. In addition, the country conducts 200 sentinel tests each week on samples collected across the country.

For a person to qualify as clinically recovered, he or she must test negative twice from samples taken at least 24 hours apart.

On Friday, Costa Rica began lifting some of its coronavirus restrictions. If the country continues avoiding a rapid rise in cases, it will further ease measures in mid-May.

“Not until there is a vaccine, or until there is a specific and working treatment, can we return to normal,” Salas said. “There is still no finish to the pandemic — we don’t see a finality in the short term.”
