San José celebrated the annual Sagrado Corazón de Jesús mass on June 25th, honoring the patron of Mercado Central and Mercado Borbón. The event took place on Avenida Central’s boulevard, next to Mercado Central, officiated by Father José Rafael Quirós, archbishop of San José. Hundreds participated in the mass, which blended religious tradition with community spirit.

The ceremony attracted a diverse crowd of worshippers, market vendors, and tourists, creating a solemn yet welcoming atmosphere. Following the mass, attendees were offered free coffee with either a tamal or arroz con pollo at all restaurants inside Mercado Central. This gesture of hospitality showcased Costa Rican warmth and generosity.

The event was organized through collaboration between the Union de Comerciantes del Mercado Central, the Municipality of San José, and the Catholic Church. It highlighted the importance of preserving cultural traditions and the significant role of markets in the city’s social and economic fabric.

As San José continues to modernize, the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús mass serves as an important cultural anchor, connecting the present to the past and reaffirming Costa Rican values. The success of this year’s event ensures the continuation of this tradition in San José’s cultural calendar.
