National Theater opens exhibit in Bank of Costa Rica lobby

At first glance, the first floor of the downtown headquarters of Bank of Costa Rica is just a lobby: Escalators move clients up and down, pedestrians cut through the building to get from Second Avenue to Avenida Central, businesspeople talk on cell phones, and so on. The vestibule of this San José office building is busy but not notable – except for the Siegfried Schosinsky Gallery, which consists of two walls dedicated to fine art.

Curated by the National Theater, the new exhibit “El Teatro Nacional Visto Por Los Artistas” (“The National Theater Viewed by Artists”) opened Wednesday morning, drawing a small crowd of guests and media representatives. The exhibit incorporates 26 works by a variety of artists, mostly brightly rendered paintings. The series will remain on display until Nov. 20.

“Visto” is just the first of many collaborations that National Theater staff hope to share with San José institutions, said Inés Revuelta Sánchez, general director of the theater. The exhibit is intended to kick off the celebrations of the National Theater’s 117th birthday on Oct. 26, which Revuelta intends to mark with a parade, day-long public performances, and a cake baked for 5,000 people.

The Schosinsky Gallery is open to the public during business days and free to visit.
