U.S. Remains Tops on List of Export Markets

MANAGUA – The United States continues to be the principal market for Nicaraguan exports, followed by El Salvador and Honduras, which together represent nearly half of all Nicaraguan exports, according to official trade statistics.

The government’s Center for Export Processing (Cetrex) reported this week that Nicaragua’s exports to the United States represent 28.9 percent of the country’s total exports, followed by El Salvador, 13.5 percent, and Honduras, 6.6 percent, for a total of 49 percent of the country’s exports.

Trade to those three countries is also growing. Cetrex reported that exports to the United States during the first nine months of this year totaled $371 million, up from 260 million during the same period in 2007.

In total, Nicaragua’s exports through September of this year have already totaled $1.28 billion, reaching last year’s totals in just the first nine months of the year, for a 35.4 percent growth rate from 2007.
