Honduran lawmaker wants to give $2,500 to couples married for 45 years

Marriage on the rocks? Maybe an infusion of cash can save your holy matrimony.

Honduran lawmaker Augusto Cruz Asensio proposed a bill that would reward couples for staying together for 45 years, according to Honduras’ El Heraldo. On Wednesday, Asensio discussed the proposal that would  give long-time couples a one-time bonus of 50,000 lempiras (or $2,500).The lawmaker from the Christian Democrats Party said that marriage is a promise made before God and the laws of man. Asencio explained the bonus would strengthen the bond between a couple.

The $2,500 would be a hefty bonus in Honduras, one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. But obviously using payment as an incentive to keep a couple together can bring about some nasty complications. Such as if the wife wanted a divorce, but the husband did not. So then that money turns into an incentive to subjugate your spouse. That’s not really the type of promise before God that you should be keeping.
