One detail at the end of the message changes the entire six weeks of speculation. Messi wrote that the words had been composed on July 21, two days after the World Cup final, and that what happened with his father afterward left him more convinced of the decision. Jorge Messi, his father and lifelong representative, died on August 8 at 68 in Rosario, where he had been hospitalized after a long illness. Messi had rejoined Inter Miami days earlier and flew back to Argentina for a private funeral.
Argentina lost the 2026 World Cup final 1-0 to Spain on July 19 at the New York-New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, decided by a Ferran Torres goal in extra time. Messi played all 120-plus minutes and left the field in tears without confirming anything, and the silence that followed became a story in itself.
His tournament had been anything but a decline as he finished the World Cup with eight goals and four assists and passed Miroslav Klose’s career record of 16 World Cup goals before Kylian Mbappé edged one ahead of him.
