The 2020 CONCACAF Champions League begins next week, and two Costa Rican clubs will face rivals from Major League Soccer as part of the tournament’s Round of 16.
Deportivo Saprissa will meet the Montreal Impact, while San Carlos hosts New York City FC in the tournament, which comprises the region’s best club teams.
Saprissa and San Carlos both qualified thanks to their performances in the 2019 CONCACAF League, which El Monstruo Morado won in November. New York earned its berth as 2019 MLS Eastern Conference regular-season champions, while Montreal finished atop a Canadian tournament.
All matchups in the CONCACAF Champions League are played in a home-and-home format. Saprissa will host Montreal on Wednesday, and San Carlos will host New York City on Thursday, with both return matches held in North America on Feb. 26.
San Carlos and New York will both be making their CONCACAF Champions League debuts.
Mexican teams have historically dominated the CONCACAF Champions League, and Liga MX’s Monterrey are the reigning winners.
