Two Costa Ricans investigated for role in international child porn ring

Two Costa Rican men are being investigated for their apparent role in a worldwide child pornography chat group, according to a Tuesday press release from the Prosecutor’s Office.

The men, identified only by their last names – Matamoros Duarte and Rojas Jiménez – were briefly detained Monday following police raids in San Pedro and Heredia. Although the suspects were released, they are still “bound to the criminal process,” according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

Details from the press release show that the suspects are believed to have received child pornography over a WhatsApp chat group that included numbers from all over the world. Two of the numbers in the worldwide chat group had a Costa Rican country code, apparently belonging to the suspects.

Authorities said they obtained important evidence during the raids that will be used in the investigation against the two suspects.
