23rd Credomatic Music Festival kicks off in Costa Rica

Classical musicians from around the world have flocked to Costa Rica for the annual Credomatic Music Festival. Latvian violinist and conductor Gidon Kremer and German organist Arndt Martin Henzelmann are among the highlights at this year’s festival, along with the Baden-Württemberg Accordion Youth Orchestra, which features the world’s best accordion players between the ages of 16 and 27.

The festival opened over the weekend with performances at Villa Caletas near Jacó, on the central Pacific coast, and Gaia Hotel & Reserve in Manuel Antonio, also on the Pacific coast. Here’s a schedule of all the upcoming events:

Tuesday, Aug. 6

Weiss-Mery Duo: A presentation from flautist Dawn Weiss and guitarist John Mery, who will play works from Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Kennan, Giuliani and Piazzolla, 7 p.m., Centro de Investigación y Conservación del Patrimonio Cultural.

Baden-Württemberg Accordion Youth Orchestra: Orchestra director Silke d-Inka will lead the youth orchestra through works by Brahms, Bizet, Shostakovich, Pizzolla and Ginastera, 7:30 p.m., Teatro Espressivo Pinares.

Wednesday, Aug. 7

Mannis-Archilés Duo: Flautist Francesco Mannis and guitarist Ana Maria Archilés present work by Molino, Ibert, Corma, Moner and Piazzolla Euterpe, 7 p.m., Hotel Alta.

Thursday, Aug. 8

Mannis-Aguilar Duo: Pianist Elena Aguilar Gasulla and flautist Francesco Mannis present work by Donizetti, Gaubert, Taktakishvili, Ferran and Mower Euterpe, 5 p.m., National Theater.

Organ and Soprano Concert: Organist Arndt Martin Henzelmann and soprano Katrin Klingbiel play works by Bach, Pachelbel, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Rheinberger, Dvorak and Lemmens, 7 p.m., Metropolitan Cathedral of San José.

Friday, Aug. 9

Vibraphone concert: Kremerata Báltica and Andrei Pushkarev perform music by Vivaldi, Pelecis, Chaikovsky and Pizzolla, 7 p.m., Sueño Azul Resort, Sarapiquí.

Organ and Soprano Concert: Organist Arndt Martin Henzelmann and soprano Katrin Klingbiel perform music by Bach, Pachelbel, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Rheinberger, Dvorak and Lemmens, 7:30 p.m., Las Mercedes Church, Grecia.

Saturday, Aug. 10

Baden-Württemberg Accordion Youth Orchestra: Orchestra director Silke d-Inka will lead the youth orchestra through works by Brahms, Bizet, Shostakovich, Pizzolla and Ginastera, 5 p.m., Playa Blanca in Punta Leona.

Weiss-Mery Duo: A presentation from flautist Dawn Weiss and guitarist John Mery who will play work from Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Kennan, Giuliani and Piazzolla, 5:30 p.m., Hotel Villa Caletas Zephyr Palace.

Mannis-Archilés Duo: Flautist Francesco Mannis and guitarist Ana Maria Archilés present work by Molino, Ibert, Corma, Moner and Piazzolla Euterpe, 5:30 p.m., Hotel Le Caméléon, Puerto Viejo.

Siempre Estaciones: Music inspired by the different seasons with Gidon Kremer and Kremeratica Báltica on violin and Andrei Pushkarev on the vibrophone, 8 p.m., National Theater.

Sunday, Aug. 11

Baden-Württemberg Accordion Youth Orchestra: Orchestra director Silke d-Inka will lead the youth orchestra through works by Brahms, Bizet, Shostakovich, Pizzolla and Ginastera, 5 p.m., Restaurant El Patio.

Wednesday, Aug. 14

Orchestra Presentation: Kremerata Baltica, Dzeraldas Bidva, Leva Paukstyte, Ingars Girnis, Vidas Vekerotas and Peteris Cirksis present music by Philip Glass, Mozart and Gershwin, 6 p.m., Sarapiqui Rainforest Lodge.

Mannis-Archilés Duo: Flautist Francesco Mannis and guitarist Ana Maria Archilés present work by Molino, Ibert, Corma, Moner and Piazzolla Euterpe, 7 p.m., Earth University in Guácimo.

Orchestra Presentation: Kremerata Báltica, Dainius Peseckas, Madara Petersone, Ruta Lipinaityte, Simona Venslovaite, Santa Vizine, and Dainius Rudvalis, play music by Taneyev, Latenas and Bizet, 7 p.m., Hotel Si Como No.

Piano Concert: Teresita Gómez plays music by Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, Chopin and Colombian composers, 8 p.m., National Theater.

Thursday, Aug. 15

Orchestra Presentation: Kremerata Baltica, Andrei Valigura, Ieva Pranskute, Marie-Helen Rannat, Skaiste Diksaityte, Zita Zemovica, Olga Zhukova, Anton Zhukov and Andrei Pushkarev present work by Bartok, Rossini, Hiller, Reinfeldt, Jachaturian and Piazzolla, 5:30 p.m., Hotel Cristal Ballena in Bahía Ballena.
