Air France adds Flights to Costa Rica

Air France has exciting news for travelers between Costa Rica and Europe as they announce an increase in flight frequencies starting June 19. The airline will now offer five weekly flights between Juan Santamaría International Airport in Costa Rica and Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport in France. These flights will be operated by Air France’s state-of-the-art Airbus A-350, ensuring a seamless and comfortable travel experience. The decision to expand the flight offerings reflects Air France’s commitment to meeting market demand and signifies their continuous growth in Costa Rica. This development not only enhances connectivity between the two countries but also opens up new opportunities for travelers to explore Costa Rica’s natural wonders while fostering cultural exchange. Rincón de la Vieja Volcano Alert Raised after Eruptions

Recently, the Rincón de la Vieja volcano in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste region has experienced a series of phreatic eruptions, prompting authorities to upgrade the alert level to orange caution. The Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori) at the National University (UNA) has reported the release of plumes containing water vapor and volcanic material, reaching heights of over 3,000 meters above the crater level. A total of 58 phreatic eruptions have been recorded thus far, with no significant damage reported.

The National Emergency Commission (CNE) has taken proactive steps to ensure public safety, issuing a green alert for specific districts and urging the tourism industry to act responsibly. Additionally, they have emphasized the need to avoid the Azul, Pénjamo, and Azufrada rivers to prevent potential hazards.

The recent eruptions at Rincón de la Vieja have highlighted the volatile nature of volcanic activity. Authorities and experts are working diligently to ensure the safety of nearby communities and maintain responsible tourism practices. Remarkable ‘Virgin Birth’: Costa Rica Crocodile Defies Odds

An international team of scientists have discovered a ‘virgin birth’ by a female crocodile living in a Costa Rican zoo. The study, published in the Biology Letters journal, is an unprecedented event. The crocodile laid 14 eggs, one of which contained a fully formed stillborn baby crocodile. The researchers believe this was a result of facultative parthenogenesis (FP), meaning no male was involved in the reproductive process. This phenomenon is often called “virgin birth” and has been found in other species, such as fish, birds, lizards, and snakes. The eggs were artificially incubated for three months but failed to hatch. The study also points out that the crocodile’s virgin birth gives insights into dinosaur reproduction and may be more common in animals in danger of extinction, such as the American crocodile.

Costa Rican President Talks about Migration

In an interview with CNN journalist Andres Oppenheimer, President Rodrigo Chaves discussed the massive influx of migrants to Costa Rica and the country’s response. Chaves noted that Costa Rica has historically welcomed migrants, and the country has invested between 200 and 300 million dollars to provide them with education, social security, health, and public safety. In December 2022, the government signed two decrees to modify the regulations for refugee applications to avoid “misuse” by migrants. Congressman Ariel Robles and PLP Congresswoman Johanna Obando both expressed their views on the matter, with Robles urging the President to recognize the invaluable contribution of migrants to the country and Obando advocating for the creation of conditions for more employment for everyone regardless of nationality.
