Collaboration Fuels Scarlet Macaw Preservation Efforts in Costa Rica.

The vibrant scarlet macaw is an iconic symbol of Costa Rica’s exceptional birdlife. Found in the Central Pacific region, the macaw population in La Cangreja National Park has flourished, now numbering over 2,000. Recent bird counts in 2023 recorded a staggering 180% growth rate, with 2,121 individuals identified. These encouraging results highlight the success of conservation efforts and collaboration to protect the scarlet macaw and other avian species. As a leading sanctuary for the birds, La Cangreja National Park will continue studying and safeguarding this irreplaceable part of Costa Rica’s natural heritage. With the right measures, the country can ensure the survival and prosperity of the magnificent scarlet macaw population.

Costa Rica Court Upholds Sea Turtle Habitat Protection.

The Administrative Court of Costa Rica’s Second Judicial Circuit recently dismissed a lawsuit by developer JBR Capital Ventures challenging construction regulations imposed by the Municipality of Nicoya near the environmentally sensitive Ostional National Wildlife Refuge. The municipality had approved limits on building size, height and light pollution within 5 kilometers of the refuge to protect nesting sea turtles. JBR claimed the rules were illegal without an official regulatory plan, but the court ruled municipalities can regulate hazardous situations irrespective of such plans. The decision reinforces local authority to restrict development in sensitive areas and was praised by conservationists, though critics argue it hinders investment.

Tour Spotlights Costa Rica as Leader in Accessible Travel.

The Costa Rican Tourism Institute and accessible travel company Wheel The World have launched a promotional campaign highlighting Costa Rica’s inclusive tourism offerings. A group of wheelchair-using influencers are exploring accessible destinations across the country and showcasing facilities and services for travelers with disabilities. The trip involves national parks, hot springs, beaches, wildlife viewing and more. The Costa Rican Network of Accessible Tourism has provided vital support, organizing specialized itineraries and adaptive activities. The pioneering collaboration aims to attract new travelers with disabilities in 2023 and produce promotional content targeting the U.S. market. By investing in inclusive tourism, Costa Rica can reaffirm its reputation as a progressive, welcoming destination for all.
