Turrialba Volcano, located 50 kilometers east of Costa Rica's capital, erupted at 5:10 a.m. on Saturday. So far, there have been no reports of ash in San José or the surrounding suburbs.
The eruption last Friday of Costa Rica's Turrialba Volcano spewed large amounts of ash that ended up along the volcano’s outskirts due to heavy showers and mild winds that day, experts from the University of Costa Rica's National Seismological Network (RSN) reported Tuesday.
Recent activity at Rincón de la Vieja Volcano has led the Red Cross to mobilize a small team to assess possible risks of flooding and damage to bridges over the Pénjamo River.
Guatemala's El Fuego volcano, just 50 km from the capital, roared back to life on Wednesday, spewing ash high into the air, disaster safety officials said. Experts said potential eruptions in the afternoon could affect air traffic, though no interruptions had been reported at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
MANAGUA, Nicaragua – The Telica Volcano in northwestern Nicaragua erupted Wednesday, sending up dense columns of ash that settled over six surrounding villages, civil defense officials in the area said.
The government, which declared a 60-day state of emergency, has sent livestock feed to the area and is preparing an evacuation plan in case the situation worsens.
Experts from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica say activity has decreased at Turrialba since its peak from October to May, however gas and ash explosions similar to that recorded Saturday could still occur.
