China to finance expansion of highway to Limón

The widening of Route 32, a highway connecting San José with the Caribbean province of Limón, will be financed with the support of the Chinese government, according to a press release from Casa Presidencial.

President Laura Chinchilla confirmed that the financing agreement was reached during her recent Asian tour, and that a Costa Rican delegation of members from the National Roadway Council and the Finance Ministry will visit China next week to formalize the details of the loan to expand the route to a four-lane highway.

Chinchilla also said that this effort “is part of a plan to build a corridor that starts at the Moín Container Terminal in Limón and then continues through a network of roads to avoid having trucks pass through downtown San José.”

Project funds will come from those approved for the construction of a new oil refinery to be built in Limón by China, for which a group of officials from that country will visit Costa Rica in coming days.
