US Social Security Administration could suspend benefits for 800 U.S. citizens in Costa Rica

Some 800 U.S. citizens living in Costa Rica could lose Social Security benefits if they fail to complete, sign and return a foreign enforcement questionnaire by Dec. 30, 2013.

The U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica warned through a press release that it takes 45 days or longer to resume payments once benefits are interrupted.

According to the press release, the Social Security Administration (SSA) regularly contacts beneficiaries with addresses overseas to verify their current status.

This year, questionnaires were sent to beneficiaries whose Social Security numbers end in 50-99, an those who receive benefits on behalf of a minor or disabled person.

Beneficiaries who have not responded to notices sent in July and October should return the questionnaire to the address provided on the envelope.

Beneficiaries with questions can contact the Federal Benefits Section at the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica (phone number 2519-2000) or send questions or comments to SJRegion@ssa.gov listing a full name, last four digits of the Social Security number on which benefits are received, and two telephone numbers.
