Gov’t Seeks Funds To Renovate Sewers

THE Costa Rican government is movingforward in talks with the governmentof Japan for a $100 million credit to helprenovate the Central Valley’s sewer system,La Nación reported.However, for the renovation of morethan 1,700 kilometers of sewer pipes tobegin, Costa Rica would have to matchthat credit and add another $50 millionfrom the National Water and SewerService (AyA), bringing the total cost ofthe sewer treatment project to $250 million.The paper reported that because of thecurrent state of the nation’s sewers,approximately 1,800 liters (475 gallons)of raw sewage are dumped into the country’srivers each day.
