Costa Rica Still Waiting For Digital Nomad Regulations

Despite the fact that the law looking to take attract high paid mobile workers was passed last year by the National Assembly, the government has yet to establish the regulations to determine how the law will be applied.

This has frustrated potential mobile workers and local businesses looking to take advantage of the worldwide trend to work from anywhere.

Highly skilled and well paid workers looking for an offshore location to work from or “Digital Nomads,” are being sought by many countries as they bring in not only additional revenues but also their skills to Costa Rica.

They are also being sought by many businesses looking to improve their digital presence and their ability to compete in a worldwide marketplace.

According to the travel company Kayak, Costa Rica is currently in 7th place among the 111 best countries to work remotely and as number one in North and Central America.

Ruben Chacon, the president of CANATUR, the National Chamber of Tourism, released the following statement.

“We are a popular destination because we have the conditions that this type of worker is looking for, we should not waste time to generate the necessary conditions that allow us to attract this type of tourists who break with seasonality, promote the reactivation of tourist activity and boost the economy. through the consumption of products and services”, stressed Acón.

It is unclear when the required regulations will be forthcoming, or why there is a delay. Until then, many fear Costa Rica may be losing out on a unique opportunity that may not come again.
