Costa Rica soccer to face Brazil at National Stadium in April

The Costa Rica women’s national team will welcome Brazil to the National Stadium in La Sabana on April 8, the Costa Rican Soccer Federation announced.

Brazil is ranked No. 9 in FIFA’s current rankings and represents the most notable opponent Costa Rica has hosted in recent history. The South Americans have made eight World Cup appearances and finished as runners-up in 2007.

“We have the opportunity to face a high-level team, and it will help us to improve,” said Amelia Valverde, Costa Rica’s coach. “As a country, let’s show that women’s football is growing.”

La Sele is fresh off an encouraging performance at the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament. While Costa Rica failed to reach the 2020 Olympic Games, they beat Panama and Haiti, and lost a hard-fought contest against Canada.

Brazil, led by former U.S. manager Pia Sundhage, will represent South America at the 2020 Olympics after winning the 2018 Copa America.

Costa Rica’s last home matches were during a regional tournament in October 2019. Those contests were held at Alejandro Morera Soto Stadium in Alajuela.

Two months later, at the same venue, a record crowd of nearly 17,000 people watched Codea Alajuelense defeat Saprissa in the Costa Rica club women’s soccer final.

Ticket details and the kickoff time have not yet been announced for the Costa Rica-Brazil match.
