¡Grande! Ticas advance to qualifying tournament for 2020 Olympics

La Sele is one step closer to Tokyo.

The Costa Rica women’s national team has advanced to the final regional qualifying tournament for the 2020 Olympics with Tuesday’s dominant 5-0 victory over El Salvador.

Before 3,600 fans at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, La Sele scored early and often. Raquel Rodríguez struck twice within the first 20 minutes, and Costa Rica cruised into halftime with a 3-0 lead.

Priscilla Chinchilla and Sofía Varela scored in the second half to secure the final margin of victory.

After Tuesday’s result and last Friday’s victory over Nicaragua, Costa Rica has secured a spot in the 2020 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship, which will be held in January.

From the Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship, the top two teams will earn a bid to Tokyo 2020.

Costa Rica has appeared in a FIFA Women’s World Cup (2015) but has never qualified for an Olympic Games.
