Embassies advise U.S. citizens to ‘keep a low profile’ due to Middle East tension

United States Embassies across the world — including the one in San José, Costa Rica — are warning U.S. citizens to “keep a low profile” due to tensions in the Middle East.

There is no specific information implicating an increased threat to U.S. citizens in Costa Rica, the Embassy says. However, “out of an abundance of caution,” U.S. citizens abroad should take some common-sense precautions.

Below is the U.S. Embassy’s communication in full:

There is heightened tension in the Middle East that may result in security risks to U.S. citizens abroad.

Out of an abundance of caution, U.S. Embassy personnel are instructed to review security, safety, and emergency procedures.  The Regional Security Office has no information regarding an increased threat in Costa Rica.

The Embassy will continue to review the security situation and will provide additional information as needed.

Actions to Take:

  • Keep a low profile.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists
  • Review your personal security plans.
  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
