Armed men rob boat with 23 tourists in Tortugero

Twenty-three tourists aboard a boat in Pococí, Limón were robbed at gunpoint Saturday morning.

Police confirmed that three hooded men carrying firearms intercepted the boat, which was traveling through the Tortugero River, and robbed the tourists of their suitcases and belongings. The tourists were taken to the Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) for assistance and police are still searching for the gunmen, but say the area is complicated to search.

According to the Costa Rican Tourism Board’s (ICT) most recent numbers, Tortugero is the fifth-most visited national park in Costa Rica and is only accessible by boat or plane.

“That can happen anywhere, anytime,” said Victor Diaz, an employee at Casa Marbella, the tour company that operated the boat that was robbed. “It was  an accident, and it doesn’t happen often.”

Diaz said that the robbers took cell phones, money, and cameras, but no one was injured.

This is a developing story.
