Court ruling close at hand on Costa Rican, Nicaraguan borders

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague has announced that on Feb. 2, it will issue its ruling about the maritime border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica and the land border on the northern part of Islas Portillos.

The court made this statement in a news release on Friday.

The origin of the border disputes between the two countries dates back to 2010, when Costa Rica protested Nicaragua’s military occupation of border territories in the Isla Portillos area.

Nicaragua later presented a separate case about alleged environmental damage on the border of the San Juan River, where Costa Rica had built a road.

Meanwhile, the court has been carrying out a separate process to respond to a request from Costa Rica to define the land and maritime borders between the countries, both on the Caribbean and the Pacific.
