Halloween Surf Fun in Costa Rica with Costumes and Waves

Every Halloween, the beach town of Tamarindo in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste province takes celebration to a whole new level, blending the festive spirit with its love for the waves. For locals, there’s only one way to enjoy this spooky holiday: by donning creative costumes and hitting the surf.

The Halloween Surf event in Tamarindo invites surfers of all ages and skill levels to dress up and paddle out in full costume, creating a colorful and surreal scene on the beach. This unique tradition was started several years ago by Courtney Gaw Borquet and has since become an annual favorite. This year, the event was organized by Tommy Whalen and Margaret Schaffner, who ensured it was another unforgettable celebration of both Halloween and surf culture.

Surfers arrived decked out in an array of imaginative outfits, from classic witches and skeletons to unique, beach-inspired characters. According to Tico Times freelancer Ellen Zoe Golden, who joined the festivities as a mermaid and even won second place in the costume competition, the Halloween Surf event brings the community together in a fun and lighthearted way.

The costumes add an extra challenge to surfing, but participants enjoy the playful vibe, making it a memorable day for both surfers and spectators. The Halloween Surf in Tamarindo is not just about the sport—it’s a celebration of the community’s creativity, love for the ocean, and playful spirit.

Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or just in it for the costumes, this annual event highlights the unique blend of Costa Rican beach life and holiday festivities. It’s one of the many reasons why Tamarindo stands out as a must-visit destination for Halloween in Costa Rica.
