Costa Rican police rescue U.S. family adrift off Pacific coast

A family of four from the United States was rescued off the coast of Playa Flamingo in the Costa Rican province of Guanacaste after their kayak was adrift on the water, police announced Thursday.

According to officials from the Public Security Ministry, the family, which includes two little girls aged three and five, was found in front of Penca Island in the Pacific Ocean.

The family entered the ocean on a sail kayak, but failed to take into account a sudden change in the weather. Police said strong winds and a powerful current swept the family out to sea.

None of the four family members had any disclosed injuries when police found them. The adults were identified as Paul Rinta and Epic Wales.

U.S. tourists are keeping Coast Guard authorities busy in the Pacific so far this year. In March, three men from the United States who went out fishing were rescued while adrift in the waters near Manuel Antonio. Earlier in February, a U.S. kayaker was picked up after he was hit by a wave and fell from his vessel off the shores of Playa Ocotal in Guanacaste.
