Taxi fares to increase this month

The basic fare of taxis could go up from â‚¡590 ($1.18) to â‚¡595 ($1.19) if a proposal by the Public Services Regulatory Authority (ARESEP) is approved.

The proposed hike establishes an extra â‚¡5 for the first kilometer and â‚¡10 for each additional kilometer.

Gilbert Ureña, representative of the Taxi Drivers National Forum, said they will attend ARESEP’s public hearing because they want the increase to be â‚¡15 for the first kilometer and an extra â‚¡15 for each additional kilometer.

Taxi fares in Costa Rica are calculated annually in February and August, based on increases in the cost of living and variations in the international price of oil.
