Costa Rica braces for highest winds in 13 years

Costa Rica residents should brace themselves Wednesday for the strongest winds in 13 years.

The National Meteorological Institute told the daily La Nación that gusts reaching 80-90 kilometers are expected in the Central Valley and the northwest province of Guanacaste, due to a high-pressure system in the Caribbean.

The institute warned residents to be careful and to avoid areas where there is a risk of falling trees or branches.

Since last week, powerful winds have caused problems for emergency workers fighting a blaze at Chirripó National Park in the Southern Zone. The currents have carried flames through the treetops. The fire has burned through 150 hectares of forest.
