Traffic back to normal on General Cañas Highway

At 5 a.m. Tuesday, the Public Works and Transport Ministry and the National Roadway Council opened all four lanes of traffic on the General Cañas Highway, which connects San José with the province of Alajuela.

Two Bailey bridges built over a sinkhole – which shut down two lanes of the highway last Tuesday – are working as expected.

However, Traffic Police are monitoring the situation, and restrictions remain active for heavy vehicles (6 or more tons), which are not allowed to enter the General Cañas from 6-8:30 a.m. inbound to San José, and from 4:30-7 p.m. outbound from San José.

The sinkhole appeared last Tuesday on the highway, resulting in chaos for commuters, businesses and many airline passengers who missed flights out of the country.
