30-year-old U.S. man, unidentified woman found dead in Costa Rica home

The bodies of a 30-year-old U.S. man and an unidentified woman were found in a quiet Tres Ríos neighborhood east of San José on Thursday. Authorities discovered Benjamin Adams McCoy with a gunshot wound to the head inside the residential complex Omega. The woman’s body did not show any signs of physical violence but she was surrounded by drugs and syringes, according to sources at the Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ).

The OIJ sources did not have any additional information about the woman, but neighbors said she was also an expat and had been in living with McCoy. A security guard at the complex told CRhoy.com that the couple had been living there for two months, and were always very friendly.

“It’s a surprise because they were very quiet and nice people,” security guard Jader Ruíz told CRHoy.com. “I did not hear gunshots or anything, I can only say that they were foreigners.”

Neighbors hadn’t seen the couple since Tuesday evening. The landlord, a Costa Rican woman, apparently encountered the bodies at 3 p.m. Thursday. She then alerted police, who say the case remains under investigation.

*This information was updated at 11:01 am on Friday. A previous version stated the unidentified woman was Adams’s girlfriend.
