Parents target Social Security System officials with protest to reopen liver transplant program

The parents of six Costa Rican kids protested Thursday along with members of the National Association for a Second Chance at Life in front of the Social Security building in San José to urge officials to reopen a liver transplant program at the National Children’s Hospital. The program was closed due to a lack of trained nurses to attend to surgeries about three years ago.

“We have waited almost two years for the surgery for our daughter Kaisy. She needs significant attention, and the Social Security System is taking from her the right to have a normal life,” said protester and mother Cristina Sánchez.
