Gunmen kill deputy mayor in Guatemala in brazen attack

The deputy mayor of a town in northern Guatemala was gunned down by unknown assailants, in a brazen attack in front of the municipal building, police said on Saturday.

The shooting, which left one other person injured, took place Friday in the town of San Francisco in northern Petén state, which borders Mexico.

Authorities said the town’s deputy mayor Hector Pop Andres, 38, was fatally shot as he stood in front of the building by two assailants on a motorbike who dismounted, opened fire, and then sped away.

It was the latest in a wave of shootings that sees about 17 people gunned down each day in Guatemala, amid violent turf battles between warring druglords.
