More Cuban Defectors Land in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA– A group of 17 Cubans arrived April 17 on the Caribbean coast of Honduras, bringing the total number of Cubans to arrive illegally in Honduras this year to 170, police said.

The boat carrying the group, which included two women and 15 men, ran aground on the coast near the community of Baja Mar.

The deputy police commissioner for the country’s northern region, Rigoberto Santos, told journalists that the Cubans were turned over to Immigration authorities.

Santos gave no further details about the incident, such as when the Cubans left their island or the type of boat they used on their journey.

Another 24 Cubans arrived on Honduras’ Caribbean beaches on April 5 and 6.
