Bilwi to Get International Airport by May 2009

The government reported this week on its Webpage “El Pueblo Presidente” that work has started on a $25 million project to expand and modernize the regional airport at Bilwi (Puerto Cabezas) with the goal of converting it into the North Atlantic Autonomous Region’s first international airport by May.

When finished, the airport will be complete with lights and have the conditions necessary to receive Boeing 737 airplanes, according to Orlando Castillo, general director of the International Airport Administration Company (EAAI).

“With this airport, there will be an opportunity to change the economy of Nicaragua and the region because it will be an alternative terminal to Managua” InternationalAirport, Castillo said.
