Warren Kramer, a teacher of natural healing methods and former assistant to world-renowned macrobiotics guru Michio Kushi, will be in the western San José suburb of Escazú next month offering weekend introductory lectures on healthy living, as well as cooking classes.
Kramer spent 11 years working with Kushi, who has been teaching healthy eating for more than 60 years and whose career includes a teaching stint at New York’s Columbia University, as well as appearances before U.S. Senate and United Nations committees to speak on promoting healthy eating.
Kramer promotes a balanced lifestyle according to the traditional principles of yin (expansion) and yang (contraction).
Through this understanding, Kramer says people can help control fatigue, obesity, diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, cancer, skin disease and digestive problems.
The macrobiotic diet he teaches is oriented toward those foods that cause a healthy alkaline condition, including whole grains, miso, sea vegetables, pickles and beans.
Sponsoring the seminar is Costa Rican architect Angela Jiménez, who went on a macrobiotic diet that she says eliminated her high blood pressure and thus her need for blood pressure medication, along with 20 pounds that never came back.
The cost of a whole weekend of courses, set for Sept. 15-16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., is $200. Class size is limited and advance reservation is required. Kramer also will be available for private consultation on a limited basis Sept. 14 and 17.
