New Albums Showcase Bolero, Tango

A couple of new albums featuring Latin music are on the market, brought by independent labels Papaya Music and Putumayo World Music.
Luis Enrique Mejía Godoy’s “Mis Boleros” showcases the Nicaraguan musician’s take on the genre, which he describes as “the love song of Latin Americans.”
The album incorporates a wide variety of influences from across the Americas, such as jazz, swing and son, and retails for about ¢7,000 ($14).
To publicize the release, Mejía, supported by Argentine-Tico Adrián Goizueta, will give a free concert Sunday at 6 p.m. at La Vereda in the Terramall shopping center in Tres Ríos, east of San José.
Another new release to excite music lovers is “Tango Around the World,” from the Putumayo
label. The album features traditional tangos from Argentina along with more modern interpretations spawned by the genre’s worldwide popularity.
The disc is a collaboration by artists from such diverse countries as Norway, Senegal and Serbia, as well as Argentina, and retails for about $15. According to Putumayo’s Web site (www.putumayo.com), a portion of the proceeds from the sale of “Tango Around the World” will be donated to L.I.F.E. Argentina, which works to improve the quality of life of underprivileged Argentinean children.
