Police in Guanacaste rescued four American tourists from a violent home invasion in Nuevo Arenal de Tilarán on Thursday evening. The confrontation with armed suspects led to a shootout that left one assailant dead and two others on the run.
The incident unfolded shortly after 6 p.m. in the Lago Cote area, where the tourists—three women and one man—were staying in a short-term rental property. Authorities received a 911 alert from the victims, who noticed suspicious activity and contacted help before the suspects fully overpowered them.
Public Force officers arrived quickly and encountered three masked men attempting the robbery. The suspects fired at the patrol unit, prompting police to return fire. One assailant sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The other two escaped into the surrounding mountainous terrain, triggering an ongoing search operation involving specialized units from the Ministry of Security.
Once the area was secure, officers entered the residence and found the tourists bound and gagged but unharmed. Paramedics from the Costa Rican Red Cross transported them to a nearby medical center for evaluation. No officers reported injuries, though a police vehicle showed multiple bullet impacts.
Michael Soto, director of the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ), spoke to reporters on Friday morning about the event. He explained that the timely alert allowed police to intervene while the suspects were still present. “This is a mode of operation that has occurred over the last few months, especially in coastal and tourist areas, where they target foreigners,” Soto said. He added that such crimes harm national tourism by creating safety concerns for visitors.
Investigators believe the assailants gathered prior information on the rental and its occupants, a tactic seen in other recent cases. The OIJ has documented multiple similar assaults on tourists in Airbnb-style properties across the country, often involving demands for electronics, jewelry, or forced financial transfers.
Those who live in the area expressed shock at the violence in their quiet community near Lake Arenal. Authorities continue to track the fugitives, with aerial and ground support deployed to cover the rugged landscape. The case remains under investigation, with the OIJ urging property owners and visitors to report any unusual behavior promptly. Officials emphasize that quick action, as in this instance, can prevent worse outcomes.
