Exports Grow 13.1% During First Nine Months of Year

Costa Rican exports have grown 13.1% so far this year, according to a statement from the Foreign Trade Ministry (COMEX).

From January to September, exports reached $6.9 billion, 13.1% more than the same period in 2006.

The main products exported were microprocessors, banana, medicines, pineapple, textiles, coffee and electronic goods, among other products.

COMEX said sales from Central America have grown 17% so far this year, reaching $1.2 billion.

The United States, Costa Rica’s biggest trade partner, has bought $2.7 billion worth of goods so far this year, a 6% increase over last year. The main items sold were banana, pineapple, cantaloupe, parts for computers, electronic components, medical equipment, textiles, sugar, juices and fruit concentrates.

China is the second largest destination for Costa Rican goods. The country has purchased $1 billion worth of goods so far this year, mostly in computer parts.

Last year, Costa Rica’s exports reached $8.1 billion. The government has set a goal of exporting $18 billion worth of goods by 2010.
