The Japanese Embassy in Costa Rica has been funding several education and community projects throughout the country in recent months.
Most recently, the embassy donated more than $88,000 to the Cieneguita Association for Integrated Development in Limón, on the Central Caribbean coast, for the BalvaneroVargasSchool. The money will go toward construction of four classrooms and a host of sanitary services at the school that serves 830 students.
Japanese Ambassador Hidekazu Yamaguchi said education is a priority within the Japanese cooperative program.
Education Vice Minister Eduardo Ulloa said Balvanero Vargas is one of the ministry’s priority schools and that they hope to go forward with construction of more classrooms.
The Japanese Embassy has made several similar donations in recent months as part of its Assistance for Community Projects and Human Security program that focuses specifically on community development.
Last month, the Japanese donated $86,000 to the San Martín de Venecia School and another $69,000 to the LosLlanosSchool in Aguas Zarcas, both in the San Carlos canton in the north-central part of the country for similar school construction projects.
In August, the embassy gave $84,000 to the Association for Indigenous Integrated Services for the construction of five schools in the Cabécar community in the Talamanca mountains on the Caribbean slope in Chirripó de Turrialba. The schools will also serve as community and meeting centers, and will also offer some basic medical services.
The embassy also donated $90,000 to the CoopeRosalesSchool in Cartago, as well as about $87,000 to a local community development group for the construction of a senior center there, among other projects.
