Costa Rica COVID-19 Deaths and Hospitalizations increase, Cases Continue to Decline

With the good news that the overall numbers continue to come down, unfortunately, the number of hospitalizations and deaths continue to go up. Let’s take a closer look at the numbers that came out this week from the ministry of health to make better sense of all this.

A Closer Look at the Numbers

As of February 15, the Health Ministry reported 4,507 cases were recorded, 23 deaths and 1018 people remain hospitalized, 6 in private centers and 1,012 in the public system, of this total 145 people are hospitalized in the ICU and 873 are in a public room.

Week Number 6:

  • 34,191 new Covid-19 cases from February 6 to February 12
  • A decrease of 4185 new Covid Cases compared to week 5, (January 30 to February 5 29)
  • The average number of hospitalized Covid-19 patients in Costa Rica was 951 (the week before it was 822 people)
  • There were 775 new hospital admissions associated with Covid-19, up from 668 the previous week (13% increase)

These totals represent an average of 5576 cases per day and a 1.4 % week-over-week decrease.

Breakdown by Age Groups

  • 70.6 % were in the age group of 65 and over with 6 deaths
  • 17.5% in the 50-64 age group
  • 10.3 % in the age group of 18 to 49 years of age
  • 1.6% for minors.

In Week 6 Costa Rica added 111 deaths related to Covid-19, a 30.5% increase compared to the prior week.

Grand Total

This brings the total number of deaths in Costa Rica, as of February 8, 2022, that can be directly related to Covid-19 since the pandemic began to 7,829!
