Costa Rica seizes 780 kg of cocaine hidden in salt shipped from Colombia

Anti-drug authorities in Costa Rica seized a shipment of 780 kilograms of cocaine that had arrived from Colombia hidden among a thousand bags of refined salt, the government reported Thursday.

The Drug Control Police (PCD) found the illicit cargo Wednesday during a container inspection at the Caribbean port terminal of Moín in Limón, the Ministry of Public Security (MSP) said in a statement.

The minister of the branch, Michael Soto, said that it is the second shipment of cocaine detected in the Caribbean port in recent days. Earlier in the week, 1,250 packets of cocaine were found hidden in pineapple juice destined for Holland.

“This is another blow against transnational criminal organizations,” said Soto in a video distributed by the Ministry of Public Security.

The cocaine hidden in the salt came distributed in 26 sacks. They were in a container that had left Colombian ports in Cartagena.

“So far in 2020, the PCD has seized a total of 7,716 packages of cocaine at the container terminal in Moín, each weighing approximately one kilogram, which was in containers. With this there is a certain blow to the international transfer of drugs,” the ministry’s statement said.
