U.S. national team closes 2019 with dominant victory over Costa Rica

The United States women’s national soccer team closed 2019 with a dominant victory over Costa Rica.

After scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes, the U.S. added four in the second half to run away with the 6-0 win in an international friendly Sunday at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Fla.

Carli Lloyd struck first in the 4th minute, and Lynn Williams scored a second-half brace to power the U.S. over their Central American rivals.

With the victory, the United States finishes 2019 with a 20-1-3 record — perhaps no win more memorable than the FIFA World Cup Final in July.

Meanwhile, Costa Rica will regroup and focus on qualifying for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The deciding tournament will be held in January, and the full details of the event were announced last week.

The qualifying competition will consist of two groups of four CONCACAF teams each. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals, and the semifinal winners will each earn a bid to the Olympics.

Costa Rica is in a group with the United States, Panama and Haiti.
